The Customer and Community Group is focused on creating a well-connected, engaged, and thriving community by delivering a variety of essential services in a way that enhances social, cultural, and recreational aspects of Pōneke.  Our team at the Tawa Recreation Centre are supporting this vision by providing affordable, accessible recreation and leisure opportunities that encourage participation of Pōneke’s communities.


Āu ake mahi | What you'll do


We have an exciting opportunity for someone to join the Tawa Recreation Centre team as a Recreation Assistant on a permanent part-time basis.


As a Recreation Assistant, you’ll be the go-to person that supports members of the community while they visit our recreation centre. This could include developing and delivering programmes, activities and services to our Pōneke community. Ideally the successful applicant will also be able to referee our basketball and netball leagues.


You will also be responsible for:

  • Providing excellent customer service to the community, including meeting and greeting customers

  • Ensuring the facility is clean and maintained, meeting specified standards

  • Assisting in the set-up and set-down of equipment for programmes and events

  • Carry out administrative tasks


This role will be 10.5 hours per week; 2.5 hours on a Tuesday and Wednesday, and 5 hours on a Sunday.

To enable success in this role, we’re looking for someone who:


  • Has customer service experience

  • Is passionate about the sport and recreation industry

  • Possesses a customer-focused and 'can do' attitude

  • Has great communication and people skills

  • Is a qualified referee (beneficial)

  • Can work in a team and have fun


The hourly rate for this role is $28.95 per hour.

Pre-employment Checks

Please note this role is safety sensitive and will require you to undergo pre-employment drug and alcohol, and health testing.


The Council uses the AS/NZ drug standard to determine the cut off levels for drug testing.  Some prescription drugs may be included within this standard.
